Abstract

Literature is one of creative work which is made of words toward the expression of human life through language. The author commonly exposes their feeling, experiences, what they have seen, and everything what they have perceived about life. In this study discussed one of John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars. The story about teenager named Hazel who has disease of thyroid cancer. Hazel must bring BiPAP (Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure) to assist breathing everywhere. The objectives of this study were identify Hazel emotions in John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars, and describe the way how Hazel expresses her emotions in John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars. The research design of this study was qualitative research because this study did not numerical analysis, but in the form of words. In this case, the data were taken concerning with on phenomena Hazel’s emotion in John Green’s Novel The Fault in Our Stars. This study used objective approach. In collecting the data, the writer read and understood the novel, choosing the data dealing with the problems which become the focus of the study, namely emotion, identifying the data which are related to the purpose of the study on the novel, and rewriting all of the data which have been chosen and identifying based on the original quotation in the novel The Fault in Our Stars.The result of this study showed that Hazel had some emotions which were anger, fear, grief, and pleasure. Hazel had some ways to express her emotions which were; 1) The way she expressed her anger. She expressed her anger to her mother by rebelling her mother’s utterance. She expressed her anger to Augustus by expressing her feeling openly. 2) The way she expressed her fear. She expressed her fear to have a boyfriend by expressing her feeling openly. She keeps her fear about her diseases. 3) The way she expressed her grief. She expressed her grief about her diseases by her feeling openly. She keeps her grief emotion to her self when she was doing chemotherapy. 4) The way she expressed her pleasure. She also keeps her pleasure emotion to her self after she was doing chemotherapy. She expressed her pleasure about her mother’s fantastic job by her feeling openly.
